Oneupweb Reviews: Volunteering at The State Theater
When was the last time you volunteered to keep a community tradition alive?
The heart of a community is its downtown. You know that main street in most American towns that builds our sense of community.
Throughout the country you’ll find these main streets that offer a piece of history written in black letters on a lit-up marquee.
In Traverse City, Michigan, Front Street is where our sense of community begins and its history is often told through the generations that cross paths at The State Theater.

The State is where Movie Lovers go to see the motion pictures that launched Hollywood and where we experience our favorite kids’ flicks through the eyes of our children for just 25 cents. It’s where we see Oscar-worthy films underneath a replica of the Northern Michigan Sky.
Though most of us at Oneupweb are fairly young, each of us has our own memories of waiting in anticipation for tickets at the box office, while people wander in and out of the downtown shops. And all of us appreciate the importance of keeping a community landmark alive.
Volunteering at The State Theater is Oneupweb’s way of supporting our downtown while keeping an important tradition going. And we aren’t the only ones who see this importance.
The State Theater has gained support from documentary-maker Michael Moore, a fellow Michigan native, whose Academy Award is currently on display (And yes some of us, including yours truly, placed our hands on the display case to give our own thank you speech).
But more importantly, this theater is home to the local volunteers whose dedication keeps the doors open. Volunteers at The State believe in what they are doing and are dedicated to giving movie goers the very best experience.
Working with such a great group of people to support our downtown makes volunteering at The State both rewarding and fun.

If you aren’t from around here, or can’t volunteer to help with shows, make a point of attending the theater’s annual Traverse City Film Festival.
