Hello Oneupweb Review fans! It’s been an exciting week for video. YouTube increased its video limit to 15 minutes, and some very entertaining viral videos were created along the way. As always, you can count on us here at Oneupweb to keep you informed of the most viral/entertaining videos each week in our Fun Friday Review. Let the journey begin!

Guy Walks Across America:

Speaking of journey (Don’t stop believing! Oops, wrong Journey.), the creators of this next video took a very long journey across America, and the result is quite impressive. Now I know that no one would want to watch a video of some guy walking across America in real-time (I have a feeling a video like that would exceed even YouTube’s newly extended 15 minute limit). But never fear! These creative folks applied some nice stop-motion and time-lapse video to create a short-attention-span-friendly video for the rest of us.

Look behind the scenes of this epic video by clicking Behind the Scenes of Guy Walks Across America.

Best Celebration Ever In Football:
Everyone loves a good celebration dance; unless you’re on the opposite team, of course. But we have to give it to this team. This is a new one!

Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind):
Comparing Newport (located in the United Kingdom) with New York, as this song creator alludes to, is like comparing Apples to Tangerines. But the extreme differences didn’t stop this professional rapper from creating the massively viral music video you’re about to see.

Basil Marceaux—The Next Governor of Tennessee:
There are some things that you don’t have to speculate about, and in this case, there’s no doubt that Basil Marceaux is the next governor of Tennessee. I had our team of experts look at Basil Marceaux’s website, and for the first time in Oneupweb history, we realized that we really just couldn’t make it any more perfect than it already was.

All kidding aside, Basil’s offer to “IMMUNE YOU FROM ALL STATE CRIMES FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!” if you vote for him is a tempting offer, you have to admit.

Jane Austen’s Fight Club:

Two things at the opposite ends of the spectrum: movies I love, and books my wife reads. I suppose that if you meshed the two together, you would have something similar to this.

The biggest thing in video this week (even this year) is the Old Spice Man responding to tweets through personalized YouTube videos. I know, I know we already talked about it earlier this week. What’s there left to say? Well I’m glad you asked. (Don’t worry you didn’t forget, I asked for you.)

It’s been interesting to see how these videos have played out. While Old Spice’s personalized video campaign started and ended this week, that didn’t stop a certain Harold B. Lee Library from making its own version of the original commercial.

New Spice | Study like a scholar, scholar:

Very nicely done. I especially like the guy lying next to the plant around 0:18. It is a library; he knew the risks going in there.

To give you an idea of how popular the Old Spice campaign has become, take a look at this screen shot of YouTube’s Most Viewed videos.

YouTube Most Viewed Screenshot

The guy with no shirt, standing in a towel, represents the video responses from The Man Your Man Could Smell Like. That’s a lot of Most Viewed Old Spice videos.

Another popular topic this week has been Lebron James and his decision. I’m not going to pretend that I know a lot about tennis or what doubles team Lebron James was traded to, but I will say that this next video is hilarious. Steve Carell is truly a comic genius.

Oneupweb Reviews: Old Spice Ads Get Personal

Posted by Adam D on July 14, 2010 at 11:27 am

Remember when Old Spice was a picture of a old guy on a sailboat in a cardigan sailing into the sunset? I recall my grandfather using Old Spice, and that made sense, after all it was called Old Spice (he he, love you grandpa).

Here’s an ad I found created by Old Spice back in the day.

Then a few years ago, the Old Spice brand took a new direction with the legendary Bruce Campbell.

After that Terry Crews:

Now we have Isaiah Mustafa who has made famous the line, “Look at your man, now back to me.”

Even more interesting is that he (Old Spice) is now personally responding to famous people and not-so-famous people’s tweets with video responses on YouTube. Here are a few below from yesterday:

Re: @TheEllenShow | Old Spice

Re: Tarteviant | Old Spice

Re: Perez Hilton | Old Spice

I only wish that more brands would get creative like this. Think about it, if Old Spice, a deodorant company… (let that sink in for a minute) can make videos that are both entertaining and promotional, why can’t your brand or company?

Look at your brand, now look to me. Back at your brand, now back to me. Do you wish this was your brand? Well unfortunately it’s not your brand, but it could be.

Hey everyone, are you as excited as I am that it’s Friday? Sure you are. We here at Oneupweb are in the middle of the National Cherry Festival. We’ve seen the Blue Angels, fireworks, parades, and yes the carnival is in town! But of course we did find some time to be productive along the way. This week, while the Blue Angels were practicing right outside our window, a client told me during a call that he felt like he was in the movie Top Gun. How cool is that? Sorry, Goose, but it’s time to buzz the tower!

We also found some time to run into some very piquant (thanks thesaurus.com) videos. First up is…

World’s Largest Skateboard Disaster:

Take a skateboard the size of a house, a huge hill, and what does that spell? Disaster. Well at least according to Woodward Camp. I would describe this as amazing/hilarious, but to each his own! Watch it and let me know if you agree in the comments.

Double Rainbow:

I love this video.

In an exclusive interview with CBS’s Shira Lazar, the video’s creator, Hungrybear9562, talks about his encounter with the double rainbow (maybe even a triple).

You seemed pretty excited about this rainbow…

Because you could actually feel the rays down from the sun but it was rainbow rays. You can’t describe it. It was so powerful that it knocked me down.

The rainbow rays knocked you down?

You couldn’t see me on the ground, but at one point I had been knocked on the ground. But the rainbow was a double rainbow and then it turned into a triple rainbow. You can’t see it on my camera but the whole thing was filled in with color. It was a giant disc of color. It looked like a giant eye looking at me.

Is that common to be knocked down by rainbows?

I don’t think it’s common, but it happened. It was pretty amazing!

Since the video has hit the web it has garnered almost 2 million views, and has become an internet meme. My favorite 2 remixes are listed below. Enjoy!

Oneupweb Reviews: YouTube Leanback

Posted by Adam D on July 8, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Google promised that this year it was going to invest heavily in YouTube’s interface and key feature improvements. And invest they have. The latest of YouTube’s improvements is called YouTube Leanback.

YouTube’s blog says:

“Leanback is all about letting you sit back, relax and be entertained.”

Now your videos will play continually one right after the other without having to queue up the next one. The interface is full screen as well so no more distracting ads (at least not yet). This allows the user to fully immerse themselves into whatever video they are viewing.

And with the introduction of Google TV, you can bet that YouTube is using its TestTube as a way to work out the kinks in Leanback before Google TV goes live towards the end of the year.

Leanback is all high definition. And even though the interface is intuitive and aesthetically pleasing it won’t run well on a slower computer.

The purpose of Leanback, it appears, is to replace the traditional TV interface. So as far as that goes it serves its purpose pretty well. I would watch videos on it. And the more content that YouTube adds to its service the more useful this service will become.

Oneupweb Review: Thumbs Up

What do you think about Leanback? Let us know in the comments below.

OneUpWeb Reviews: Friendly Music

Posted by Adam D on June 29, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Have you ever created a YouTube video with just the right music, only to have the sound removed because of a copyright infringement? Yeah me too, it’s a bummer. You find the perfect music to match the mood of your video and then it’s taken away.

I understand why musicians and their record companies don’t want to give away or grant permission to use their music for free. I mean we all have to make a living. And YouTube gives owners of content the option to monetize it or have it removed. Many publishers choose to target ads on a video for example, rather than having it removed. While YouTube works to educate producers about the advantages of allowing YouTubers to use their music free of charge, the site FriendlyMusic.com is taking a different approach.

For only 1.99 a song (yes you do have to pay a little) you can use music that has been created on FriendlyMusic.com within your YouTube videos. And since the music is licensed for you to use, there’s no more getting your video pulled or music muted on YouTube. Can I get a Woot Woot? Yeah you’re right, it’s not quite that exciting, but it’s a little exciting. If you create a lot of YouTube videos, FriendlyMusic.com is truly useful.

Here’s a quick tutorial on how to use Friendly Music:

Once you select your musical keyword you will be presented with several musical options. To top it off, the music is actually pretty decent.

Friendly Music offers a way to add background music to your YouTube or other videos without having to worry about the licensing. And the music is actually good which is a plus.

Welcome to Fun Friday! Yes, today there’s magic in the air and we have some great videos for you. Sally forth!

Academy Award Winning Movie Trailer

I’m usually one who avoids the norm, just for the simple fact that everyone’s doing it. I laugh at funerals, cry at birthdays, and sweat profusely in large groups. There’s just something in me that resists the status quo. So I was surprised when I was genuinely moved by this next video. It’s making fun of how cookie cutter movie storylines are. Watch it, and tell me if you don’t get swept up in the moment (I can’t believe I just said that; don’t judge me).

Craftsman Music Experiment – Craftsman Labs

To marketers looking for a great example of how to make a viral video, in my humble opinion, this is it. Taking a seemingly boring product line and making an entertaining music video, is a creative way to increase exposure for a brand. The one thing I might have changed is the genre of music. My guess is that Craftsman’s target market is more rock and roll or country types. At any rate, entertaining stuff. My favorite part is when the sprinkler kicks in.

Gandalf Goes to the World Cup

In traditional fashion the Vuvuzela takes something great like this Lord of the Rings film and drowns it out. There’s been much discussion about the Vuvuzela and the disturbance it has caused during the World Cup. I just recently became interested in soccer so when I heard the sounds (and thought I was being swarmed by bees) I assumed it was a “soccer” thing. But according to our resident soccer expert, Chip Rice, this is an isolated South Africa incident.

We hope we were able to make you smile today. Let us know your thoughts on these videos. We’d love to hear from you!

Oneupweb Reviews: YouTube Video Editor

Posted by Adam D on June 23, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Recently, YouTube announced that it’s testing out a new online video editor. This editor allows even the most novice video producer the ability to shorten and merge videos into one.

To use the editor, simply navigate to YouTube.com/editor after you log into your YouTube account. All your uploads will be displayed similar to what is seen above. From this interface you can drag the video you would like edit into the editor’s timeline at the bottom of the screen. Now mouse-over a video’s thumbnail and you will see a pair of scissors. Click them. A pop up will display allowing you to move the indicators at the beginning and the end of your video. When finished you can preview your video in the upper right of the interface. You can also add a music overlay to your video. Here is a quick mesh-up I did with some Oneupweb videos.

YouTube’s online video editor will help many YouTubers improve the quality of their videos (no more awkward pauses). At the moment it’s very basic for a video editor. The main features allow users to cut the beginning and the end of videos as well as merge several together. But I would like to see a fade-to-black transition so that the videos don’t suddenly stop at the end. I like the direction that YouTube is taking with this so for that I give it a

Oneupweb Reviews: Social Media & the 2010 World Cup

Posted by Adam D on June 14, 2010 at 3:56 pm

The FIFA World Cup is one of the most watched events in the world. Though soccer (or football as it’s known outside the USA) is only recently catching on in the United States, it is one of the most popular sports around the rest of the globe. It’s no wonder that the 2010 World Cup, taking place right now in South Africa, has caught the social media bug. It’s not uncommon these days for promoters of large events to utilize social media. Both the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and MTV Movie Awards were integrated with social media marketing campaigns.

FIFA World Cup logo

Here are a few ways to stay connected with what’s going on in the 2010 World Cup.

There are several World Cup News feeds. You can subscribe to the latest news, interviews, photos, and videos. You can even follow individual team news, photos, and videos.

Twitter has created a World Cup 2010 page to encapsulate every second of the world game action.

Twitter World Cup 2010 screenshot

Click on a flag to select a country and view only tweets pertaining to that country’s hash tag. The feed you see in the screenshot above is tracking the hash tag #USA, which doesn’t always apply to the World Cup, but can be helpful if you’re looking to chat with people from your country. If you click on “View Match” on the far right of the page you can see tweets from both competing countries.

Though YouTube didn’t create a separate page specifically for the World Cup, ESPN’s YouTube Channel has done a decent job of covering the news from South Africa.

ESPN YouTube Channel screenshot

However, in my opinion the social media integration for the World Cup has been disappointing. I haven’t seen any creative innovations like the Olympic Tracker, or the MTV Movie Awards Tweet Tracker. All in all, the FIFA’s social media integration is pretty basic. RSS feeds and… that’s about it. Everything else was created by parties outside of the World Cup Committee. At the very least, I would like to see Facebook’s Like button under World Cup photos, videos and articles. You can click on the share button located on the World Cup’s home page but, again, basic integration would be nice.

Oneupweb Review: Thumbs Down

For being one of the most popular events in the world, this really should have had more social media integration. I can think of a dozen different ways that the 2010 World Cup could be spread virally through the web. Perhaps they felt soccer was already popular enough, but I really have no idea why more wasn’t done.

At any rate, here’s a summary of what happened last week in the England vs USA match.

You can also view the video highlights from the match here: England vs USA. And don’t forget to watch USA vs Slovenia Friday the 18th.

Oneupweb Reviews: BP Oil Spill Parody Videos

Posted by Adam D on June 11, 2010 at 12:16 pm

What happens in Vegas now stays on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Many have learned this truth the hard way. Social networking has fundamentally changed the way information is shared by making communication faster, easier, and more permanent.

Successes that will be seen in the World Cup this weekend, and failures like BP’s oil spill disaster, are now shared and documented for the entire world to see.

Superhero Aquaman was one of the more publicized victims taken, after an attempt to stop the spill himself (maybe he’s just asleep?).

Another Casualty of the BP Oil Spill Wild Ammo Images

But hey, it’s not a complete loss. Fortunately some really great parody videos have been created. In this first one BP representatives spill some coffee on a board room table. Let the clean up begin!

BP Spills Coffee:

BP has also realized the power of social networking, and in turn created a YouTube channel (BPplc) to share its efforts of the cleanup. Below is the latest video that BP has uploaded, explaining what is now being done to remedy the problem.

On board the Discoverer Enterprise:

We leave you with one more BP oil spill parody video. In this video BP Public Relations David Winthrop, attempts to put a positive spin on the disaster. Ultimately realizing that doing this, might be over his head.

BP: Rich Fish

Comedy can be a great way to get a message across or to cope with difficult situations. There will always be problems in the world. There will always be situations to get worked up over. But for helping to disperse the frustration, like BP disperses oil, we give these parody videos a…
