Oneupweb Reviews: Apple Announces Ping—A Social Network for Music

Posted by Adam D on September 1, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Today, Apple announced its new project, Ping—a social network for music. See, below is a screenshot from the live Apple conference that says so.

Ping a Social Network For Music oneupweb reviews

A niche social network that focuses on music-related topics, Ping allows users to post thoughts and opinions about a particular song, album, or artist and share it with their friends. You can also view concert listings and tell your friends what concerts you’re attending.

Ping also allows users to follow their favorite artists. Similar to Twitter, MySpace, or Facebook, following an artist on Ping will allow users to view artists’ activities. You can see photos they’ve uploaded, videos, announcements on tour dates and much more. Perfect for the stalker who has a lot of free time on their hands!

Ping will also be offered on Apple mobile devices including iPhone and iPod touch. This will allow users to take their social music experience on the go.

Oneupweb Reviews: Thumbs Sideways

I think I’ll wait to give a solid rating on this one. If you’re like me, you’re thinking Ping sounds a lot like Bing, and functions a lot like MySpace. Then again, this is Apple and they tend to come up with some pretty cool stuff.

What do you think? Does the world need another social network like Ping? Let us know in the comments below.

Oneupweb Reviews: The Teen Choice Awards Get Social

Posted by Adam D on August 10, 2010 at 2:19 pm

After this weekend’s Teen Choice Awards, there are a few things we now know to be true. Bieber fever isn’t going away (don’t stop believing, though), vampires rule and social media needs to be a part of every business marketing strategy.

It’s abundantly clear—the Teen Choice Awards heavily markets to the teenage demographic. It’s the demographic the show was built for, so no surprise there. But this year, like Pepsi moving much of its budget from TV to social media, the Teen Choice Awards moved its focus to where its target market is—online. And to do this, they took the awards social.

In fact, the combination of social media services used to promote this event is dizzying: streaming live through UStream, then on to Fox’s Teen Choice Awards Facebook Tab, and finally integrating Facebook’s Live Stream plugin. Wow! Take a look at the Facebook tab below.

Teen Choice Awards Facebook OneupwebReviews.com

On Twitter, they created an account to share news concerning the Teen Choice Awards. Then, Fox took it one step further by creating a persona called the Teen Choice Girl. This persona claimed to have the inside scoop on all the latest TC news. It’s  smart marketing, since much of Twitter consists of a younger female demographic. Check out the Twitter profile below.

Teen Choice Awards Twitter OneupwebReviews.com

Though much of MySpace is a desert wasteland compared to Facebook and Twitter, for music, it’s still an ideal place. Which is exactly why the Teen Choice Awards chose to create a MySpace profile as well.

Teen Choice Awards MySpace Oneupwebreviews.com

Facebook, Twitter and UStream were strong for The Teen Choice Awards, but I think that they missed out by not using YouTube. While they did have the host of the popular YouTube show What the Buck hosting live on the red carpet, they simply did not have any sort of YouTube presence, which is unfortunate. I think it’s safe to assume that Fox was nervous about copyright laws, etc—but why not have its own channel featuring stars, or even internal employees, talking about the upcoming show?

We shouldn’t pick on Fox too much, though. After all, not utilizing YouTube is a small missed opportunity when you compare it to all of their other great uses of social media this year. So we give the marketing strategy of the Teen Choice Awards a…

Oneupweb Reviews: Posterous—The Next Generation of Blogging

Posted by Adam D on August 4, 2010 at 7:50 am

The internet. The final frontier. These are the bloggers of OneupwebReviews.com. Our mission to explore strange web start-ups, viral videos, and really, whatever is awesome. To seek out new tools and services. To boldly write what no one has written before!

Do I love Star Trek, you ask? Does a Farangi love Oo-Mox? You bet they do! And as much as I love Star Trek, blogging comes in a close second. So if I discover a new way to make blogging that much more convenient and fun, you bet I’m gonna write about it!

Enter Posterous (queue 2001: A Space Odyssey theme).

I think a lot of bloggers love to write and share ideas, but don’t necessarily have the technical skills to setup a WordPress blog. So when it comes to blogging, the easier the better. This is where Posterous comes in.

For example, to setup your account, all you have to do is send an email to Post@posterous.com. That’s it. It really couldn’t get much easier than that. Don’t believe it? I know, it sounds too good to be true, but try it. We won’t spend too much time on the setup because it really is easy as pie. So let’s look at some Posterous features.

Posterous boasts the ability to create blogs on the go. You can write a blog on your laptop or mobile phone, email it to Posterous, and your blog will be created for you. Want a few images in your blog? Simply attach them to the email and they will be uploaded and posted quicker than you can say, “Engage”! You also are given a robust set of controls to manage your blog.

But possibly the most attractive feature that Posterous offers is Auto Posting. If you suffer from IAD—Internet Addiction Disorder like I do—then you have several social networks to update (Not sure? Take the Internet Addiction Test.). Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Tumblr, and Wordpress to name a few. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to push your blog to these sites automatically? (I know, an obvious segue right? Just go with it.) Well, with Posterous you can!

For filling in that small spot somewhere between desktop blogging (Wordpress) and micro-blogging (Twitter), we give Posterous a

It’s a big day for geeks all around the world. Today one of the biggest games in history is being released: StarCraft II Wings of Liberty. 11 years in the making, the newest version of this epic strategy game played by millions has finally arrived, and geeks like me can’t wait to get their hands on it.

The YouTube video above has received over 3 million views in 6 days. StarCraft, the original game, also holds several marks in the Guinness Book of World Records.

StarCraft II YouTube Channel: Total Upload Views = 4,602,811

StarCraft II YouTube Channel

In addition to the StarCraft II YouTube channel, the game has made waves by effectively using social media channels like Facebook and Twitter. With over 370,000 Facebook Likes, it’s safe to assume creating StarCraft II’s Facebook page was a good move for Blizzard Entertainment, the creators of the game series. Blizzard has also setup individual Facebook pages to target several countries, including Korea, Italy, Singapore, and Russia.

StarCraft II’s Facebook Page: Over 370,000 Facebook Likes

Last night, Blizzard Entertainment held midnight premiers all over the world to kick off the launch of the highly anticipated game. Photos of the Global Midnight Launch events were also uploaded to Facebook.

StarCraft II’s Twitter profile has also been very effective – having already acquired over 38,000 followers. Similar to its Facebook Page, separate Twitter profiles have been created to target several different countries.

StarCraft IIs Twitter Account: Over 38,000 Followers

Being a Gold Level beta tester (this simply means I’m awesome, he he) I can vouch for the game itself. It really is something else, and certainly lives up to all the hype. But the use of social media for marketing and promotion of the game is what I wanted to focus on with this review.

Blizzard Entertainment has done a great job connecting with fans of the game on almost every social media channel possible. For great use of YouTube videos, Facebook Updates, Tweets, and much more on Starcraft2.com, we give the marketing strategy for this epic strategy game a…

Oneupweb Reviews: 4 Ways To Schedule Tweets And Facebook Updates

Posted by Adam D on July 20, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Have you ever just wanted a simple way to send your Twitter and Facebook updates at a later time? Maybe you’re going away for the weekend, or you’re at work all day but you still want to send your friends and family updates. Here are a few of our favorite ways to schedule tweets and Facebook updates.

FutureTweets:

FutureTweets screenshot

The great thing about FutureTweets is that you can schedule tweets simply and months in advanced. For example, you can schedule all your family and friends’ birthdays, then let FutureTweets remember them for you. I’m pretty sure my grandma does this somehow with snail mail cards. She never forgets a birthday (you can’t keep this secret forever grandma!).

Twuffer:

Twuffer screenshot

Twuffer is another free, simple, and easy to use way to schedule your tweets. The layout is clean and professional. It also includes a calendar and lists the tweets that have already gone out.

Su.pr:

Supr screenshot

StumbleUpon is really starting to grown on me. I’ve always enjoyed using this site personally but now they are adding some nice features that help to simplify your social media world. For example, you can schedule updates through StumbleUpon using their URL shortner, Su.pr, and share it across your Twitter and Facebook profiles.

LaterBro:

LaterBro screenshot

The thing I really like about LaterBro is its simplicity. You login with either your Twitter or Facebook account. Next, you’re taken to an intuitive scheduling interface. You will have no problem figuring things out from there. It doesn’t get much simpler than this.

Let me give a warning to those interested in automating your updates. You don’t want to use these services too much, especially as a business. People are looking to connect with another person, not just automated news or updates. While these services can be useful and save time, they are not meant as a replacement for authentic tweets and Facebook updates.

Oneupweb Review: Thumbs Up (but use sparingly)

What’s your favorite Twitter/Facebook scheduler? Let me know in the comments below!

Oneupweb Reviews: Old Spice Ads Get Personal

Posted by Adam D on July 14, 2010 at 11:27 am

Remember when Old Spice was a picture of a old guy on a sailboat in a cardigan sailing into the sunset? I recall my grandfather using Old Spice, and that made sense, after all it was called Old Spice (he he, love you grandpa).

Here’s an ad I found created by Old Spice back in the day.

Then a few years ago, the Old Spice brand took a new direction with the legendary Bruce Campbell.

After that Terry Crews:

Now we have Isaiah Mustafa who has made famous the line, “Look at your man, now back to me.”

Even more interesting is that he (Old Spice) is now personally responding to famous people and not-so-famous people’s tweets with video responses on YouTube. Here are a few below from yesterday:

Re: @TheEllenShow | Old Spice

Re: Tarteviant | Old Spice

Re: Perez Hilton | Old Spice

I only wish that more brands would get creative like this. Think about it, if Old Spice, a deodorant company… (let that sink in for a minute) can make videos that are both entertaining and promotional, why can’t your brand or company?

Look at your brand, now look to me. Back at your brand, now back to me. Do you wish this was your brand? Well unfortunately it’s not your brand, but it could be.

Contact our social media experts. Seriously, they’re good. And they can help you to create successful social media campaigns. Ahoy!

Oneupweb Reviews: Top Trending Videos for Fun Friday!

Posted by Adam D on April 23, 2010 at 11:12 am

Welcome to another episode of Fun Friday. I know, it’s not really an episode but I’ve always wanted to say that. As you know every Friday we here at Oneupweb review something a little different than usual. Today let’s take a look at some entertaining viral videos that hit the web recently.

First up is this moving video of Lin Yu Chun and William Shatner singing “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. In case you didn’t know, Lin Yu Chun has been referred to as the next Susan Boyle on Taiwan’s “American Idol”-like show “Super Star Avenue”. The below video has spread across the internet like fire, and as you watch it you can see why. Surprisingly William Shatner is actually the comic relief in this performance, and Lin Yu Chun has the skills.

Lin Yu Chun And William Shatner “Total Eclipse of the Heart” Duet- “Lopez Tonight”

Sometimes I wonder if 90% of Nike is a marketing team. I mean seriously they release some of the coolest commercials, and I’m sure a lot of time and effort goes into these. This is coming from a guy who scrapes labels off his stuff just so he’s not considered a walking advertisement.

Nike Music Shoe

You know there are some videos that I want to mention, and then there are others I just can’t avoid. This next one fits in the category of so viral I can’t avoid. It was discovered around April 21st, just a few days ago, and already has over 1,900,000 views on YouTube, 47,207 shares on Facebook, and 4,301 Tweets. This guy is severely inebriated and is having a difficult time completing a very simple task: holding onto his dignity.

Wasted Guy vs Flip Flop

It’s really something how much influence the average person has today because of the internet. This is probably as famous as this guy is ever going to be (I’m sure his parents are proud). Almost 2 million people have viewed his triumphant victory in the battle against his flip flops. That’s just amazing to me.

For impressive skills singing with the Shat, creating cool music with sole(s), and making mom proud we give these viral videos an…

Oneupweb Reviews: Google Follow Finder

Posted by Adam D on April 15, 2010 at 12:55 pm

How cool is this? Google recently updated its live search results with a new feature called Google Replay, and now you can find people to follow on Twitter through Google! Enter Google Follow Finder.

google follow finder screenshot

Just type a username in the search field, to find people you want to follow. Below is an example of the results you will receive using Oneupweb.

google follow finder results screenshot

Follow Finder generates two lists based on your follower and following lists. Below Google explains the two lists:

  • Tweeps you might like: We start with the list of people you follow, find others with similar lists, and then identify accounts you might also want to follow. If people with similar lists tend to follow accounts that aren’t in your list, we’ll recommend those additional accounts to you. For example, if you follow CNN and the New York Times on Twitter, and most people who follow CNN and the New York Times also tend to follow TIME, we’ll suggest TIME as a user to follow.
  • Tweeps with similar followers: We find people with similar public lists of followers to yours. For example, if ten people are following you, and the same ten people are following a second user, we’ll include the second user in this list. You may already be following some of these people.

This all seemed great, and I couldn’t wait to start expanding my 230 closest followers. But when I clicked follow, I received this error.

google follow finder error screenshot

NOOO! I tried this on several browsers, using different Twitter account logins, but to no avail. I received the same error for each. Google you were doing so well.

I guess they are still working out the kinks. Until this is fixed it does us no good, and for that we give Google’s Follow Finder an…

Oneupweb Reviews: Google Updates Twitter Search

Posted by Adam D on April 14, 2010 at 1:33 pm

In a blog post earlier today, Google introduced an update to its Twitter search functionality. Now not only can you view the most recent tweets on a topic, but you can view when something was tweeted, as seen below:

google real-time search results screenshot

You can choose a range of time you would like to see Tweets from.

google real-time search results screenshot

Once selected, the tweets that were posted within that time frame will be displayed. If there were no tweets at that exact time chosen, the tweets made closest to that time will be displayed.

This update looks very familiar to what we saw during the Olympics called the Olympic Tracker, only not as cool. But hey it’s definitely an improvement to the Google live search results.

Oneupweb Reviews: PLANCAST

Posted by Adam D on March 30, 2010 at 2:57 pm

PLANCAST is a service for sharing your upcoming plans with friends, and has been referred to as a social calendar.

Once you login, your Twitter or Facebook account info is imported to your PLANCAST profile. And because of this, setup time is quite short.

plancast profile screenshot

If you want to discover friends who may be using PLANCAST, click Discover Friends. Based on your Twitter following, friends from Facebook, or email contacts PLANCAST will show you who is using the service. From there you can subscribe to feeds, and next time plans are submitted to those feeds, you will be notified.

plancast homepage screenshot

Above is an example of what your own PLANCAST home page could look like. And of course once you create your plan, you can choose to share it across other social networks.

plancast sharing options screenshot

I think PLANCAST can be utilized in many ways for personal or businesses use. For personal use users could let their friends know what they’re up to, find out what their friends are doing, or plan a big event or party. Businesses could promote their own events through the user base already on PLANCAST. Or they could even track popular trends in local areas or abroad.

PLANCAST is a great way to keep track of your plans and share them with friends. For that we give it an…

Official Oneupweb Review: Thumbs Up

But the future of PLANCAST is unsure. With juggernauts like Facebook and Twitter casting a shadow on the social landscape, the question is, will people use PLANCAST? Especially when most of their friends are using other, more well known, social networks. What do you think? Does PLANCAST have a place in the social landscape?
